As an endorsed candidate of the Save Our Saanich Elector Organization we will ensure that we have a Council that listens to Saanich residents, is fiscally responsible, encourages thoughtful development that does not overwhelm neighbourhoods, balances transportation solutions that consider all modes of travel, and protects our treasured environment.
Why I'm Running For Council
Quite simply - the current Council has signalled that we are not welcome here anymore. They are pushing ideological initiatives that are not supported by most Saanich residents. Sadly, several of my neighbours have already left the place they used to call home. I do not want to see that trend continue.
Some Background
Like many Saanich residents, I had felt reasonably assured that Saanich Council had our back. They were maintaining roads, repairing and upgrading infrastructure where needed, and growing the community at a reasonable pace. At some point that focus started to shift. I noticed that Property Taxes were significantly outpacing inflation. Our garbage levy disappeared from the Property Tax bill and started to appear on the Utility one without any noticeable change in our Property Taxes. Before long, car lanes disappeared and bike lanes started to appear in their place. Worried that Mann Avenue changes were about to come to Braefoot Road, I rallied the neighbourhood about those proposed changes.
As I began to pay closer attention to the decisions made by Saanich Council, I became aware of the increasing level of debt that the municipality was taking on. Having hit their borrowing limit without requiring residents' consent, the District of Saanich initiated five Alternate Approval Processes simultaneously that had to be individually challenged with forms created by Saanich staff. Once again, I decided to rally my neighbours so I headed to the Municipal Hall to get enough forms for my canvassing effort only to be told that I could only have a one-time, limited amount of forms, not even enough to cover my street. So I decided to spread the word about the AAPs at the contentious Quadra McKenzie Plan Council meeting in February 2025, unaware that our home in the Braefoot area was captured within the plan. It was at that point that I became involved with Save Our Saanich.
Save Our Saanich
I am currently the Treasurer of the Save Our Saanich Neighbourhoods Society (SOS). While initially formed as a response to the Quadra McKenzie Plan, SOS has become an advocacy group for many Saanich residents. We have supported petitions against overdevelopment, and run monthly information sessions on topics of interest to Saanich residents.
One of our most notable accomplishments was defeating the borrowing of $150 million for the Saanich Operations Centre through the Alternate Approval Process. I was part of the core group that canvassed, picked up and dropped off forms for residents, attended rallies, waved signs on McKenzie and Shelbourne, and pulled daily shifts outside of the Municipal Hall.
I have been attending Council meetings regularly since February 2025. I have spoken at many public input opportunities.
About Me
I have lived in Saanich for most of his life. I attended Arbutus, Mount Doug, and Mount View, and have lived with my wife Teri in the Braefoot area for the past 25 years, where we've raised a blended family of eight children, and now enjoy twelve grandchildren, plus two beloved Labradoodles.
My career began at Victoria Press, the precursor to the Times Colonist, where I was actively involved in the union before moving into a management position. In that role, I oversaw a team of employees and managed a multi-million-dollar budget. I left the TC in my early 40s to become a software developer for a multinational firm. During that time I also created a charity fundraising platform, hibid.ca, which has helped local charities raise over $9.5 million. I continues to manage and develop the platform to this day.
